CEO Robbie Briggs on art, whisky and instant gratification (and how to get it all)

Each Friday, Robbie Briggs, CEO of Briggs Freeman Sotheby’s International Realty, writes about luxury, trends, business and more in the advertising pages of the Mansion section of The Wall Street Journal. Below is his letter of September 17, 2021.

FROM MY PERSPECTIVE

Talk about some great escapism.

If you surf sothebys.com right now for its upcoming auctions, you will discover Chinese bronzes, decorative arts inspired by Napoleon, an eye-popping diamond necklace by Harry Winston — that can be bought using cryptocurrency, by the way — works by famous graffiti artists, Hermès handbags, a wild photograph of artist Cindy Sherman as four laughing clowns and a collection of rare Scottish whiskies that one expert calls, “fleeting and final examples of their kind.”

And that’s just what’s coming up this month.

Our association with the great Sotheby’s auction house is something we cherish at our brokerage, because we think of the homes we offer as collectibles, too — places to enjoy for generations, by the generations. And while Sotheby’s is most known for selling amazing art, it offers quality things for decorating your home, too. Many are available through its Buy Now program, which means no waiting to win an auction. I get happily lost among the chairs, tables, credenzas, lamps, clocks and mirrors — every time I look.

Did you know that Sotheby’s sells in three other ways? There are the live auctions, both in person and online; the private sales, which are high-value transactions handled directly between a seller and buyer; and the nine Sotheby’s retail locations, including New York, Palm Beach and London. All are well worth a visit.

But, there is no need to travel at all. We have a direct connection to Sotheby’s right here in North Texas. Charlie Adamski Caulkins is the head of the Sotheby’s office here, and she is an invaluable resource for area collectors. Art, jewelry, wine: If it is collected, Charlie is your go-to, for sourcing, valuations and more. I’d be happy to connect you to her.

Your other unbeatable resource? One of our highly skilled Briggs Freeman Sotheby’s International Realty agents, who can guide you to all sorts of facets of Sotheby’s, appraisals included. Making the ultimate connections is what our agents do — with homes and all the other cherished collectibles out there.
