The Coveted Kitchen: The 6 luxury kitchen features no luxury home should be without

There is a reason everyone gravitates to the kitchen — no matter what. It's the most important room in the house, where families connect and friends and neighbors gather and build community, all over food and drink and conversations and fun. Whether you love hosting grand parties or whipping up a romantic dinner for your significant other, the kitchen is responsible for a lot of magic. When you're looking for a home with a beautiful luxury kitchen design, remember it's not complete without these six features.

1. Appliances that are both stylish and smart

Nothing oozes sophistication like smart features that make your life easier. Look for high-tech appliances such as smart refrigerators with touchscreens, transparent doors and cameras so you can see what's inside. There are also smart ovens you can control via smartphone, thanks to Bluetooth and WiFi connectivity features. And technology is always evolving, so our homes are only bound to get smarter. With the industry revenue expected to grow 16 percent by 2025, who knows what they'll come up with in the coming years?

2. Custom cabinets made just for that kitchen

Builder-grade cabinets simply won't do in a luxurious home, so it's befitting that some of the most beautiful kitchens feature custom cabinets that make a bold statement. These cabinets won't be made of particle board: They're typically made of strong wood such as bamboo, maple, pine, oak or cherry. Custom cabinets range from glass-front cabinets to sleek hardware-free cabinets and everything in between. There are so many unique styles you may come across, but rest assured that custom cabinets make your kitchen one of a kind.

3. Jaw-dropping, high-end stone countertops

A key element of any luxury kitchen is the countertops. You won't find many laminate or Formica countertops in a grand kitchen now — you'll find high-end materials such as single-slab marble, granite or quartz, instead. Just keep in mind that marble and granite require some maintenance and extra care due to the nature of these materials. If you'd rather not fuss over the counters, look for a kitchen with quartz countertops, as they are the strongest and do not require a special sealing coat.

4. The matching backsplash. (Or, the complete opposite.)

To give a kitchen that full wow effect, it's all about a backsplash. Matching the backsplash to the countertops — for example, a Carrara marble top and a Carrara marble backsplash — gives kitchens a sleek feel and helps minimize the color palette. On the other hand, kitchens that feature bold backsplashes — think patterned tile, hammered metal or stone or glass tiles — make a statement all on their own. It's all about preference.

5. Light fixtures as luxurious as the rest of the room

A luxury kitchen isn't going to have boring light fixtures. A high-end kitchen is going to have fixtures that complement the overall design of the space, and you can bet that craftsmanship will be top-notch and they'll be made using high-quality materials meant to last a lifetime — think real bronze, real brass, stainless steel, thick glass.

6. Pops of color — and not just on the walls

Monochromatic or white kitchens may be eternal, but luxury homeowners are embracing color in some big ways. While grays and whites continue to be popular choices for the walls, for kitchen cabinets, islands and backsplashes, elegant or vibrant colors are a great way to make a luxury kitchen design pop. Some in-demand colors? "Neutral tones paired with strong colors, like deep greens, rich reds and blues, will continue to be a go-to color scheme for most," cabinet purveyor Christopher Peacock tells marthastewart.com. The story goes on: Not ready to repaint all your cabinets? Peacock has the perfect compromise. "Many of our clients still opt for neutral cabinetry colors in general, however take a color risk for their island cabinetry or in their butler's pantry. It allows homeowners to keep most of their space very calm and relaxed, while simultaneously introducing a strong color element for a bit of interest."

These six musts are just a sampling of the features homeowners can look for when shopping for a home with their dream kitchen. If you love to host grand parties, cook delicious meals or experiment with new recipes, the kitchen is the one room you may not be willing to compromise on. After all, with open-concept living spaces still reigning, you'll spend the majority of your time in the kitchen, and it's important that it's just as beautiful as it is functional.
