8 Fort Worth Restaurants and How to Support Them

Its as important as ever to support the mom-and-pop shops, family-run eateries and local icons the next time youre thinking of eating out (or ordering in). We love to eat; we're guessing you do, too. So, it seems mission-critical to discuss some excellent local spots to chow down. Below, find eight cant-miss options for spectacular food in Fort Worth, including Mexican, barbecue and Texas staples, along with pickup, delivery and other COVID-19-related updates. (And, as a friendly reminder, these fabulous Fort Worth restaurants make more money if you contact them directly for takeout versus ordering through third-party delivery services.)

1. Heim Barbecue

Billed as a spot for mom-and-pop farm-to-smoker barbecue, this growing brand of authentic Texas barbecue started as a food truck. A few years back, the husband-and-wife team opened their first brick-and-mortar location and it became an even bigger hit. They expanded to a second location and then to Dallas. Bacon burnt ends, brisket and beef short ribs offer a nice overview of their barbecue style, but many people could make a meal on the Green Chile Mac N Cheese alone.

Call your nearest location to order takeout, or order delivery from Postmates.

2. Istanbul Turkish Mediterranean Grill

When a craving strikes for Mediterranean classics, locals turn to this elegant bistro for favorites such as humus and falafel, but also lesser-known spicy ezme, piyaz, pacanga borek and hunkar begendi. With lunch, dinner and brunch options (including traditional Turkish scrambled eggs), youll find something to love nearly any time of day.

3. Love Shack Burgers

Celebrity chef Tim Love knows his way around burgers, and this laid-back Stockyards joint rounds out his numerous restaurant concepts around the Metroplex. Massive burgers (which can be made even more massive by doubling the meat), grilled or fried chicken sandwiches and hot dogs all pair perfectly with hand-cut fries, onion rings and chile parmesan chips. For a true taste of the grub, order the Dirty Love Burger loaded with lettuce, tomatoes, onions, Love Sauce, American cheese, bacon and a fried quail egg.

4. Reata

Named for the iconic ranch in the 1950s film classic, Giant, starring James Dean, Elizabeth Taylor and Rock Hudson, Reata has been a Fort Worth staple since it opened in 2002. After surviving one of the most destructive tornadoes in history, the restaurant faced an almost equally devastating challenge in 2020. But its greatest hits are what they keep coming for, including jalapeño cilantro soup, tenderloin tamales, chicken fried steak and cowboy bone-in ribeye.

5. Waters Restaurant

Seafood aficionados have turned to Waters Restaurant for years to satisfy their undersea culinary desires. Crispy fried oysters called Texasfeller; a gumbo made with crab, shrimp and andouille sausage; and Cajun sea scallops with roasted corn and black bean salsa all make for a great first impression.

Call 817-984-1110 or order online for takeout.

6. Ellerbe Fine Foods

Even if youre ordering takeout, the elegant innovation of this beloved farm-to-table restaurant shines through. The menu changes regularly due to seasonality and freshness, but youll always be amazed at the creativity. Options could include sautéed gulf shrimp and grits, marinated mushroom salad with crumbled chèvre, cornmeal crusted Texas redfish and pecan-wood-grilled steaks  with the option to add New Orleansstyle barbecue shrimp.

7. Los Vaqueros

With two locations (at the Stockyards and near Texas Christian University), this well-established haven for tacos, tamales, enchiladas and fajitas checks off all the boxes when it comes to Tex-Mex traditions. Make sure to try some of the family specialties, too, including chiles rellenos, steak ranchero and Don Juan Coco Von, a Mexican version of the French classic coq au vin, chicken cooked in red wine, but even better because of a side of guacamole and pico de gallo.

Call either location for takeout or order delivery from Grubhub.

8. Little Red Wasp

The sister restaurant to fine-dining establishment Grace across the street, this casual spot in Sundance Square has been a favorite for brunch ever since it opened. However, its also a well-respected place for lunch and dinner, with crowd-pleasers such as deviled eggs and whipped ricotta with local honey, local tomatoes and Texas olive oil. They also serve knife-and-fork sandwiches ranging from a Reuben to a blackened ocean trout, plus hunger-busting entrees including chicken fried chicken and beef short rib pappardelle.
