Texas Lake Life: What to Know and Where to Buy

Texas may not be as well known for its lakes as other states, but the North Texas area surprisingly offers several scenic lakes where the sights are gorgeous and the living is easy. From homes in a range of categories and square footage, to lakefront lots ready for your custom dream home, you'll fall in love with the neighborhoods surrounding some of the most popular water recreation in the area.

White Rock Lake

In the heart of the city lies White Rock lake, a 1,015-acre lake near Lakewood, Casa Linda, Forest Hills and Lake Highlands neighborhoods. The laid back vibe of the community feels more like living in the suburbs despite being only 5 miles from Downtown Dallas. Homes can be found close to the shores of White Rock Lake, as well as in nearby enclaves very near the waterfront. Lake activities include fishing, more than nine miles of hiking and biking trails, the Dallas Arboretum, kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding, a dog park and plenty of areas to picnic and relax with a spectacular sunset.

Lakewood Charmer: Check out this cozy three-bedroom home very close to White Rock Lake.

Lake Texoma

Named Lake Texoma because this body of water straddles the borders of both Texas and Oklahoma, you can search a variety of towns that surround it, with dozens of options on the Texas side alone. Popular pastimes at Lake Texoma include fishing and boating, as well as golf, hunting, camping, hiking and biking. It's also one of the largest lakes ever built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, meaning you'll always have new parts to explore.

Luxurious Lake Living: With lake views and a fenced-in porch, there is plenty to fall in love with at this sprawling three-bedroom home.

Lake Ray Hubbard

Several towns in four different counties surround Lake Ray Hubbard, including Heath and Rockwall, where you'll find a variety of properties to suit any way of life. The lake boasts a variety of beaches and lakeside parks, as well as fishing, restaurants, marinas, boat and kayak rentals and water sports, including windsurfing for endless fun in the sun.

Lakefront Hill Country Contemporary (pictured at top): Situated on a full acre with breathtaking views of Lake Ray Hubbard, this four-bedroom home was built in 2020 with all the latest amenities and technology.

Lake Granbury

In the charming small town of Granbury, the lake has long been a desired place to find a home and put down roots. Lake Granbury offers residents and visitors a lakefront park — where you can embark on a day of jet skiing, kayaking, boating or paddleboarding — as well as a number of fishing piers where a catch of catfish and striped bass can be taken home for a great meal on the grill.

Chisholm Trail Waterfront Lot: Located in a gated community, this .88-acre plot of land sits right on the glimmering shores of the lake with colorful sunsets a hallmark of the site.

Lake Lewisville

With more than 233 miles of shoreline over 29,000 acres, Lake Lewisville has long been one of the largest recreational bodies of water in the entire state of Texas. Beaches, hiking and biking trails, recreational boating, waterskiing and a variety of waterfront restaurants and marinas surround the lake in multiple cities. Homes range from lakeside to those tucked away just a few minutes' from gently rippling water.

Promrose Lane: This quaint three-bedroom home in Little Elm features the lake nearby, as well as plenty of local shopping, dining and recreation options.

Benbrook Lake

Located southwest of Fort Worth, Benbrook Lake homes offer convenient access to both Dallas and Fort Worth, as well as DFW Airport. Boating, fishing, camping, hunting, picnicking, wildlife viewing and bird watching keep people busy and entertained every season of the year. The rather secluded location offers plenty of peace and just enough quiet to hear the nature that surrounds it.

Stately Manor in Deer Wood Forest: Everything's better in twos at this manor-style home with a duo of fireplaces, staircases and patios, as well as a spacious balcony connected to the upper-level game room and the lake within steps of the back door.
