Picturesque Lake Athens is a 1,799-acre, spring-fed reservoir best known for its largemouth bass. Approximately 5 miles east of Athens, Texas, the lake offers a variety of watersport activities for outdoor enthusiasts. The lake also offers catfish, crappie, white bass and sunfish. The Lake Athens Marina provides the only public access to the lake, plus fishing supplies, pier fishing, a restaurant, a picnic area and an RV park. The Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center is on the north shore of the lake and offers a production fish hatchery, providing an educational, entertaining visitor experience that promotes freshwater sportfishing and the stewardship of aquatic resources.
