REDEFINING RELOCATION

The relocation industry has evolved into a fast-paced, cost-driven machine. Does it work? Yes. Is it effective? Often. Is it right for everyone being relocated? Not always. Over the past 10 years, the relocation industry has experienced tremendous change. During the 1980s, relocation flourished as corporations grew at unprecedented rates. Everyone was going global – expanding not only nationwide, but touching countries and cities around the globe. Corporate philosophy was to get its employees taken care of, budget was not a tremendous issue, but finding expeditious resources to manage the move and the employee’s relocation were critical. This drove the emergence of the relocation management company where the corporation could outsource its relocation programs to professional organizations to administer a one-stop-shop approach to all benefits employees would be receiving from their company to cover the job-related move. Often these relocations were considered a promotion and an upward mobility move for the employee within the company, and making sure the relocation or international assignment was a success from the beginning was paramount.

After 9/11/2001, relocations took on a new aura – they became budget-driven, procurement-monitored and revenue-generating for the corporation. No longer were most moves considered employee promotions, but strategic growth initiatives for the corporation. Relocation management firms were asked to share revenue, and the industry was forced to create a better-faster-cheaper mentality. With this mentality driving relocations, the general employee population’s needs were systematically met. However, for the executive-level, this was often not the case. While the human resources department, which often manages the relocation program, desires to keep everything systematic, fair and balanced for all transferees, this approach does not work for the executives, who are often living a lifestyle far different from their general employee population.

Why a one-stop-shop approach doesn’t always work… Relocation is about connecting lifestyles and creating solutions that meet all needs for every employee tier. Just as a company may have several relocation policies to use within its employee ranks, the corporation also should utilize specialists within all areas of its strategic-partner base to ensure that whatever the lifestyle of its employee or most senior-level executive, it is prepared to offer the finest solutions available. It’s important to understand and to know when it is appropriate to bring in the right strategic partner to best meet the unique needs of an executive. Understanding how to connect them to social, civic and philanthropic organizations, understanding their extraordinary lifestyle, housing needs, and day-to-day needs are critical to productivity, cost containment and relocation success. Because relocating an executive can cost the company well over $500,000, making sure their unique needs are met is critical.

Whether a corporation moves 500 individuals/families each year or is in the process of relocating its first executive, strategic partnerships offering multiple solutions to meet every need and lifestyle are important elements to the relocation and its success. (In 2007, the average cost to relocate a middle manager, homeowner, family of four within the United States is $70,000. The average cost to relocate a C-level executive … priceless).
